13 Awards GED Diplomas
The
2002 Student Recognition Day, a ceremony for individuals who have
recently received their English As A Second Language (ESL) or
General Education Diploma (GED) certificates, took place recently
on the sixth floor of 450 West 33rd Street. The event, which was
sponsored by both Thirteen/WNET New York and the Office of Adult
and Continuing Education of the Board of Education of the City
of New York, drew around fifty people and was moderated by Andre
S. Gleaton, Director of Adult Education, Thirteen/WNET. A number
of individuals spoke at the event, including NYU professor Suzanne
Carothers, who also received an honorary degree that day and Richard
Fish, Director of the Mayor’s Office of Adult Literacy. Fish urged
the graduates to contact him in a year to let him know how their
lives had progressed since graduation. The ceremony also included
student performances (several students read pieces of work they
had written) and testimonials.#
