New
Schools to Open this Fall in NYC
The
Board of Education (BOE) has approved the establishment of several
new schools that will open this fall throughout the city, some
in already existing schools.
Community School District 4 approved the Bilingual Bicultural
School, PS 182M, as a K-6 school. Located on East 109th Street,
Manhattan, it has served the needs of English Language Learners
(ELL). The new school will offer ELL curricula as well as courses
to maintain proficiency in Spanish.
The Powell Middle School for Law and Social Justice, located on
West 129th Street, will teach concepts of law and social justice.
According to the BOE, “The school will parallel and support the
revitalization of the Harlem community.” Legal Outreach, an organization
that has served public schools for 18 years, will partner with
the school and provide professional development and mentoring
for staff.
PS/IS 323K, designated to support developmentally appropriate
curriculum, will open at 210 Chester Street, Brooklyn. Along with
providing support services, the school will strongly encourage
parents to serve as partners in their child’s development.
Community School District 1’s Coalition/
Umbrella School, PS 196M, will be expanded to include the 7th
and 8th grades to provide students who attended the school an
opportunity to continue their education in an environment that
maintains the principles of the Coalition of Essential Schools.
