Gymnastics
at Chelsea Piers Raises
The
BarChelsea
Piers Gymnastics is New York State’s largest, best-equipped and
best-staffed gymnastics training center. Sanctioned by USA Gymnastics
for local, state and regional competitions and based at the Field
House at Chelsea Piers, the Gymnastics Center features two column-free
competition spring floors, sunken trampolines, deep foam training
pits and tumble tracks, in addition to multiple sets of equipment
for each of the men’s and women’s Olympic events.
Chelsea Piers Gymnastics offers programming for children ages
17 months to 17 years and for adults of all ages. Children’s classes
are offered in the fall, spring and summer sessions for both girls
and boys, for the beginning, intermediate or advanced gymnast.
For those children who have excelled at these levels, Chelsea
Piers has established girls and boys gymnastics teams which participate
in local, state, regional and national competitions.
Chelsea Piers Gymnastics also boasts the largest adult gymnastics
program in the US. Over 400 adults regularly participate in tumbling
and apparatus classes within the Gymnastics Center. Beginner,
intermediate, advanced, elite and apparatus classes are offered.
All classes for adults are offered on a rolling, rather than on
a semester, basis.
In order to further enhance its programming, the Field House at
Chelsea Piers recently named Peter Kormann, former Olympian and
Olympic coach, to the position of Director of Gymnastics. In the
1976 Olympics, Kormann was the first man in over 40 years to win
a medal for the US. He also was an eight time NCAA Champion in
gymnastics, and head coach of the 1996 and 2000 United States
Men’s Olympic Gymnastics Team.
Since assuming his position at Chelsea Piers Gymnastics, Kormann
has continued his quest for excellence in his sport. Under his
leadership, the Chelsea Piers Gymnastics Center will certainly
take its place among the country’s premier facilities in the sport
of gymnastics.
