Careers for the 21st Century
By Dr. Pola Rosen

Given the expense of an education, it is necessary to find a meaningful and revenue producing job after graduation. Education Update thought it would be helpful to have an ongoing column interviewing people about their work: how did they prepare for it, what career choices did they have, where will they go next.

1. What is your current career?

2. Which college did you attend, and what was your major?

3. Did you have internships, and were they helpful?

4. Who were some of your mentors?

DIANDRA GARCIADIANDRA GARCIA
Assistant for VP at HBO Studios
Bronx, New York

My current job role is Executive Assistant to the VP of Facilities at HBO Studios. My current career is Broadcast/Media Productions.

I attended Pace University for both my undergraduate and graduate degrees. B.A. Communication Arts & Journalism, M.S. Publishing (online program).

My past internships include - publishing assistant at Virtual Sage Educational Publishing in Ft. Lauderdale (now acquired by Kaplan, Inc); editorial assistant at Westchester Magazine; story boarding, shooting, editing, line producing at New Face Media Productions & BronxNet TV. These job roles helped me become the passionate, versatile media professional that I am today. They have validated my strong desire to innovate in the fluid & exciting digital times we communicate in.

Some of my mentors include ABC News’ Investigative Reporter Angela M. Hill who I’ve met through one of my freelance jobs; BronxNet’s On-Air talent Rhina Valentin; and one of my favorite instructors in college-long time Fox News Anchor Professor Brigitte Gouchoe (TV stage name: Brigitte Quinn).

But as the author of Fight Club, Chuck Palahniuk, once put it: “I am the combined effort of everyone I have ever known.” Everyone I have come into contact with throughout this exciting career has been a mentor and guide. I am educated every single day. #
