Carmen Fariå—New Acting Deputy Chancellor
for Teaching & Learning
New York City Schools Chancellor
Joel I. Klein announced the appointment of Carmen Fari–a as the Department of Education's
Acting Deputy Chancellor for Teaching and Learning. Ms. Fari–a
has served as the Regional Superintendent for Region 8 since
January 2003.
Chancellor Klein said, "Carmen Fari–a
is an outstanding educator with a lifelong commitment to
the students of New York City's public schools. I am delighted
that she has agreed to expand her role with us and take on
new challenges at the Department. Carmen will work closely
with me as we implement all of our initiatives in Teaching
and Learning including our Secondary Reform strategy."
Ms. Fari–a has been a public
school educator for over 35 years. She spent over 20 years
as a classroom teacher, and served for 10 years as principal
at P.S. 6 in Manhattan
Ms. Fari–a served as
the Superintendent of District 15 and on the faculty of the
Bank Street College Principal's Institute.
In her years in public education,
Ms. Fari–a has won
many awards including: the Outstanding New York City Public
Servant Award from the Fund for the City of New York; the UFT "Shining
Star" Award for contributions to teacher professionalism;
the Distinguished Educator's Award from the New York City Association
of Supervisors and Curriculum Department; and the NYC Teacher
of the Year Award (Reliance Award).#
